Treatment for addiction is the first step toward a healthier life, but recovery is a lifelong journey. From the first day, you have to be motivated and focused on your goals, but you also need to be dedicated to the process.
Dedication means being fully and continuously committed to your recovery, with a willingness to persevere even when you’re faced with challenges. Dedication requires understanding the things you need to do to stay sober and being diligent about taking those actions. It also involves focus on your goals and confidence in your ability to reach those goals.
To understand dedication, consider other goals that you may have and what it takes to achieve them. For example, if you have career goals, you need to take steps like learning new skills and doing your best at your current job. To do those things consistently, you need to be dedicated to your career.
The same applies to many different aspects of your life. Relationships take work, open communication, and a dedication to keeping the relationship healthy. Personal growth and improving your mental health take dedication. If one of your goals is to make a social impact, doing what it takes to achieve that requires dedication.
Motivation is the spark that drives you toward a goal and can be temporary. Dedication, on the other hand, is a long-term commitment to do what it takes to reach a goal. In recovery, motivation is what gets you to treatment. You want to get better. But once you’re in treatment and beyond, you need to be dedicated to doing what it takes to stay sober. Motivation and dedication are both required, however, to achieve long-term success.
Dedication in recovery is critical for long-term success. Being dedicated keeps you focused on the steps you have to take to stay sober. If you’re fully committed to your recovery and you face a moment of temptation, your dedication will make you consciously use one of your relapse prevention strategies. If one of your strategies, for example, is to take a walk when you face one of your triggers, your commitment will make you take a walk.
Similarly, if you don’t feel motivated to go to a support group meeting, dedication will drive you to go anyway because you know that it’s critical to your recovery.
Taking the right steps will also be a reward. You’ll feel good about yourself because you stuck to your plan, which reinforces your good behaviors. Over time, this will make you more confident and resilient.
When you see the results of your dedication, this may also motivate you to set and achieve other goals in your life, whether you want to pursue further education, a career, or strengthen your personal relationships.
Staying dedicated in and of itself takes work. Several strategies can help to keep your dedication alive and well.
Your long-term goal, of course, is to stay sober, but thinking about forever can be intimidating. Instead, set smaller goals, like staying sober for six months. Write down your goals and then write down the steps you need to take to achieve the first goal that you set. These steps may involve going to support group meetings, exercising daily, or other strategies that work for you. Recovery is not one size fits all, so personalize your plan, and review it daily to stay focused.
Celebrate every milestone you achieve, even if it’s a small one. Say for example, you overcome the temptation to drink when you go out to dinner. That’s a win! Every victory should be a celebration and boost your confidence and your dedication.
You should have a support network that understands what you’re going through. Turn to them when you struggle, and take their encouragement to heart. They can also celebrate your victories with you. Having others who support you can help to keep you focused and committed.
Understand that you deserve the healthy life that you’re working for. Show yourself love and compassion and be proud of your achievements. Pride is a great feeling and a reward for your dedication.
Set a daily routine for yourself that includes self-care activities and actions that help your recovery. This may include meditation, exercise, speaking with supportive people, or other activities that are part of your recovery plan.
You have a reason that you want to stay sober, whether it’s to be healthier, more successful, or to be able to care for the people in your life. Whatever your “why”, think about it daily. Write it down and read it when you’re struggling. The “why” should reinforce your dedication.
